New era of contactless payment
We presented our new cashless vending product portfolio for public vending recently at various international trade shows in Orlando, Dubai, Paris and Brussels. MICROTRONIC has extended its existing RFID reader family to accept two new worldwide contactless payment standards :
1. PayPass
The second innovation is our PayPass enabled reader. PayPass is the new definition of MasterCard, Visa and Amex to replace the existing contact-based mag stripe by contactless payment (see also www.paypass.com or www.mastercard.com/paypass). This new PayPass definition is based on the worldwide ISO14443 RFID standard. In contrast to actual mag stripe payment a PayPass credit card never leaves the owner’s hands. Simple “Tap N Go” activates the payment transaction. Small purchases generally below $25 are offline and very quick : Tap and go ! PayPass will now be available for the vending market. All MICROTRONIC readers conform to ISO14443 and will be able to accept PayPass credit card payments. This will be a huge revolution of the credit card payment business. In the near future all credit cards will be replaced by this contactless payment feature. And the vending industry can also profit of additional revenues.
2. NFC (near field communication)
The MICROTRONIC RFID system of today is mostly used in a closed environment of a factory, i.e. vending machines, tills, coffee machine etc. are equipped with the MICROTRONIC RFID reader and the employees possess an electronic tag to pay with. This electronic tag has an integrated e-purse which has first to be loaded with money to take drinks, coffee and food afterwards by debiting the corresponding product prices. Of course an amount can also be transfered regularily from salary etc.
But the big news now is that a range of new cell phones is launched in different continents consisting of a so-called NFC chip. The electronic purse is directly built-in ! No privative RFID smart card is necessary. Now we are heading "public vending". Anybody possessing a cell phone with NFC capability can profit of contactless payment - and operators benefit as well of increasing sales by getting additional people to buy products of the vending machine which is equiped with our new NFC reader. Existing RFID smart cards will continue to be accepted as well.
